there's the story mode titan primal fight. That's what attracts players and makes them sticky. its more of a separate pvp thing. I recall that LoTRO had a title that you got if you reached level 20 without dying, so I used that as a goal and deleted/restarted any characters that failed.
Wargaming has done an amazing job at this with WoT: I can literally track and measure my performance progress in that game on a per-battle or daily basis.
