by that I mean that the game simply scews up direct x when it exits... If they both return INFO: No tasks running with the specified criteria. Anyone have an idea here? Why is directx so elusive?

In windows XP only one program can use Direct3d at a time... If an object does not have any methods for dealing with "DeviceLost" state, and they should be released, simply destroy the object before resetting the device, and reload it afterwards. We're looking for processes using direct3d that shouldn't be, like ghost processes of games long past.
