i was freakin b/c my ipod did the same thing after i cleaned the gunk off it, but after i used a lister pack of benedryl, the click wheel worked....brilliant! Those have a tendency of coming off with to much isopropyl alcohol. I observed the buttons are connected to those components (connections on the logic board marked by red lines) and that is why i concluded that their disappearance is the main problem.
